The poverty rate was 20.9 percent for 2011, up from 20.1 percent in 2010. The one year increase was modest but still

For a single person, poverty is defined as living off less than $11,500 annually, and for a family of four the amount is $23,021 a year. Both government officials and public policy experts acknowledge that the threshold is too low, especially in high cost cities such as New York.

The Bronx continues to have the highest poverty rate in the city at just over 30 percent of residents living below the federal poverty rate. Manhattan had the largest increase — nearly 2 percentage points in 2011 to 18.3 percent compared to the year before where the rate was 16.4 percent.
“These poverty numbers reflect a national challenge,” said Samantha Levine, a spokesperson for the Mayor’s office, “the U.S. economy has shifted and too many people are getting left behind without the skills they need to compete and succeed.”
Some specific demographics in the city did worse than others. The number of elderly, people 65 and over for instance, living in poverty went from 17.2 percent in 2010 to 19 percent in

  1. donna09 Says:

Looking at these statistics, i recognize that the Bronx has a very serious issue of poverty much deeper than i thought. There is also a high rate of unemployment. New Faith Tabernacle is called to tackle some of these issues.
Jesus Christ was anointed to tackle this issue. We too as believers have an anointing to deal with poverty and issues of disenfranchisement. Jesus Christ moved with compassion when he say the crowd. As we are moved with compassion we should seek God concerning these issues. He will direct us as how best to handle poverty.
We need to set up wealth deployment in our church. here we are pooling our resources and developing systems which will generate jobs, create industries, find housing and so on. We are participating and sharing in another’s problems.
Wealth Deployment entails the effective harnessing and allocation of resources to release the prosperity of a community. The multitude of people coming together with one heart, and pooling their gifts and talents together to uplift a community.

  2. SERENITY RETREAT CENTER Says:

Based on the Demographics of the Bronx, it proves that this area is prime for God’s Work. When there is poverty in the land, it tells us there should be a Harvest for emotional, physical, spiritual and financial food. If Poverty is not addressed in a community, it will not only become a physical problem but also socio-ecomic epidemic in our community and church as well.

Disenfranchisement has become a major concern in the Churches and most Churches are not meeting the needs of the people in the Bronx Community. Most churches are preaching the Word of God but are we implementing the knowledge and understanding of the Teaching and the answer is No. There are some Churches who are taking the Church outside of the Four Walls but not enough. Poverty in the Bronx is astronomical. This tells us that the Bronx’s Harvest is more than ready. Where are the workers? What are we doing? What have we done? Where are we hiding?

It is my opinion that like New Faith Tabernacle, some Churches are/have been identifying the problem of poverty but solutions have not been implemented in many Churches. Maslow Hierachy of Needs tells us when our Physiological, Safety, Love/belonging, Esteem and Self-actualization are not met, we become crippled in all areas of our lives. Poverty manifests highly and greatly. But Jesus came so that we would have life and life more abundantly.

Once the Wealth Deployment/Hospitality Department has conducted a study in the Bronx and knows the challenges of the community, the Department should be able to identify visitors with challenges and set up programs to solve them within the Church and Community.

  3. Covering Circle Says:

With the recent outreach that was done with the distribution of flyers nd magazines, it was a reality check for me. Many of the businesses on White Plains Road sell the same merchandise, but they do not talk to each other it is competition, when they are given the magazines or approach it is with indifference, but there is hope, more outreach in the neighborhood, speaking with the merchants. The various churches have closed behaviors but some was receptive. I also see a lot of elderly men and women with no one to talk with, n other opportunity for more overreaching.

  4. Covering Circle Says:

We live in a diverse world, where we are tugged into different directions, within this community there are smaller communities, and there are limited interactions, there needs to be more integration. Outreach, prayers are some of the ways these strongholds can be broken, .invitations given to older individuals who are shut in. There are several businesses in the area, some community resources such as the libraries, talking to people in the neighborhood, going to community board meetings.
The Family Enrichment goal is to provide information for people who have housing needs with resources where they can go , work with Me a on metro cards, counseling services for finances, life skills training, .
